Keychron K2 wireless mechanical keyboard
Keychron is a company that was founded back in the year 2017 and it is selling nice-looking keyboards for Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android users. Let me tell you that it is a decent entry-level mechanical keyboard that is small and compact. It does not have the number pad on the right-hand side. The compact design of this keyboard makes it easy to carry around and you won’t be worrying about damaging it thanks to its amazing build quality. And although this keyboard is basically designed with macOS users in mind, it comes with extra Windows keycaps. This model works on macOS as well as Windows and can connect up to three devices at once through Bluetooth. However, you cannot program any macros for gaming because it does not come with dedicated software. Now, let’s talk about the specifications of this keyboard
Specs
It is an 84-key keyboard with function keys and has a Mac layout with Command, Option, and Control keys. The product is available in white backlight as well as RGB backlight and you can customize it with 18 RGB backlight profiles. Here, it is worth noting that the Keychron K2 wireless keyboard is available in an aluminum frame and it comes with Gateron red, brown, or blue key switches. It also has replaceable curved profile keycaps. You will receive a 6-degree angle stand and it has a powerful battery of 4000mAh. With that being said, let’s talk about the design and build of this keyboard in detail. You might also want to note that the backlight has 19 different modes.
Mode Changing
Changing the modes is as simple as using a dedicated key. You can also change each mode by using the fn key and the left or right keys. It will change the color of the effects. The keyboard feels great to type on and it works flawlessly with any device, especially a Mac. You can control the brightness and volume through the function keys at the top.
Design and build
I would say that the Keychrone K2 wireless keyboard is a bit boxy with dimensions of 12.32 x 4.84 x 1.52 inches. It weighs around 30.8 ounces or 875 grams. It has a black aluminum frame with slim bezels wrapping around its perimeter. The keys of this keyboard have a mixture of dark and light grey keys and there is a single orange ESC key. The aluminum chassis of this product provides a solid and weighty feeling to this keyboard. And the keys of this keyboard look great. Underneath this fairly minimalist keyboard, you will find rubber feet. You can adjust the rubber feet, which will offer you a 6-degree angle for comfortable typing.
Bluetooth
One thing you need to keep in mind is that the Bluetooth dongle is really small. Let me tell you that this product offers a selection of different key switches embedded below the keys so you can decide whether you want a silent typing experience or an audible and full-touch typing experience. There are three key switch types and all of them are made by Gateron. These are available in red, blue, and brown. You might also want to note that the red switch version is quiet and offers a medium amount of tactile feedback. On the other hand, the brown one is a bit noisy and has tactile feedback. Lastly, the blue switch version is louder. I would say that this version is for gamers and has that tactile feedback that gamers love! You can also choose the backlighting type. If you go with the RGB version, which you can either set it to a preset color or can cycle through some wild color patterns.
Which One Did I Get?
I went with the White LED Backlit/Gateron Blue Switch. I really am not a RBG fan. It it like owning a Harley. Now matter how much chrome you put on the bike it will not get you home. That is my feelings on RBG. It is nice for a special occasion but I prefer not to have it on. The while light provides just enough light to see the keys when gaming or working in low light situations. And before you ask, Yes, I have owned several Harleys in the past. I had a Sportster, Street Glide and lastly a Electra Glide Classic.
MAC iOS Keyboard Layout
Well, it is one of those few mechanical keyboards that feature Mac layout media keys. You can use all the same media keys as conventional macOS keyboards. The Keychron K2 keyboard comes with three specific keycaps for Windows as well as Mac. Moreover, it sports Bluetooth 5.1 and while using it with three devices at the same time, you can switch between screens through fn+1/2/3 keys. Keep in mind that this function does not work if you press the f1 key. There is also an option to connect the keyboard through a type-C cable. One of the best things about this keyboard is that it has the largest capacity rechargeable battery you will see in a mechanical keyboard. Well, it has a 4,000 mAh battery. In comparison, the Apple Magic Keyboard has a 2,980 mAh battery. We all know that the tactile response is the most important characteristic of any keyboard. And trust me, you will be satisfied by the sound, look, as well as feel of this keyboard in relation to key switch design and keycap.
Connectivity
Now, let’s talk about the connectivity of this wireless keyboard. You can either connect it to a Mac or iPad Pro through a wired USB-C connection or wireless Bluetooth. You can do this without having to use the external Bluetooth dongle. On the other hand, if you want to connect it with Android or Windows devices, you will have to use the dongle. Here, it is worth noting that the Keychron K2 wireless keyboard will automatically go to sleep after ten minutes of inactivity. This function helps save on battery life. However, if you don’t like the auto-sleep mode, you can always disable it.
Battery Life
Well, disabling this function can cause the battery to exhaust faster. According to the company, the battery can last up to 15 hours if you use the keyboard constantly. And if the backlight is disabled, you can expect a longer battery life. If the battery gets low, you can connect the keyboard with your computer by using the USB-C cable. It will help you charge the keyboard while also using it. It has a low battery indicator light, which is available next to the charging port. When the battery is below 15 percent, this light will flash rapidly. And when the keyboard is charging, this light will stay solid.
Negatives on Keychron K2 Keyboard
If you plan on utilizing the bluetooth function of this keyboard please be warned. It will be very frustrating keeping the keyboard connected to bluetooth. In fact, I got so frustrated with this feature that I only use the keyboard with the cord for almost two months. Then I sat down one Saturday and spent ½ the day working on getting the Bluetooth to connect to the keybard. This is one of the most common problems listed on Reddit regarding this keyboard. However, once it connects it is a pleasure to use. The blue Gateron keys provide a nice feel and clicking sound when typing. They are fairly responsive and have upped my typing speed a bit.
Final Thoughts
In the end, I would say that this is a super tactile wireless keyboard with all the keys as well as functions you need. It is also compact and comes with the largest battery as compared to other mechanical keyboards available out there. In simple words, the Keychron K2 wireless keyboard is one of the best mechanical keyboards you can buy for the price. However, if you want to use bluetooth or use the keyboard for gaming I would use a different keyboard.
